Hope to hear all about your iBook...
I too was considering to buy a Powerbook G4 12 inch notebook... but eventually chose to go with ASUS instead.

ASUS M6800Ne, P-M 1.5 Dothan, 512MB Ram, ASUS Combo drive, Samsung Spinpoint M 40G HDD with 8M cache, Mobility Radeon 9700

    Hey!

I'm still waiting to get my ibook later this week but @ the same time am looking to add more ram to the ibook. i'm from toronto, any fellow canadians on this board recommend a good place to purchase ram? as well i was wondering if the 256mb memory it comes with is soldered on or is removable. i'm thinking of maxing it out @ 1024 although i don't do editing i feel it may be a better investment. any advice is appreciated!

    thanks.

The apple site claims the maximum memory for the ibook is 1.2 gigs. So I'm guessing the 256 is not removable. I think buying a 512 upgrade is the best deal. The 1 gig sodimms still cost too much and 256 might not be enough for long term. I've used the ibook with just a default 256MB, and it works just fine, but having more memory let's OSX keep more in the memory and seek the disk less. For me, that's a good reason to get more ram.

    Yes MistaMuShu,
The 256MB in the iBook is permanent. I found my iBook quite sluggish without the upgrade to 512MB. After the upgrade though, it works quite well.

    Computer.Geek,
I have noticed that you will get fingerprints on the screen when you close the iBook, because the screen literally touches the keys when the notebook is closed. You can eliminate this by putting a napkin or piece of paper towel on the keyboard before closing the notebook.

Why did you end up choosing the asus over both apple machines?
When people post the "what should I buy" posts on this site PC notebooks always seem to recommended very seldom ibook/pbook, why is this?

I can't say anything for AuroraS, but as for myself, I really wouldn't recommend Apple because it isn't the brand I have had the most satisfaction from.

When someone asks me what I recommend, I would no doubt suggest a brand that I have been completely happy with. If that isn't available, I would suggest the next best thing. I have owned five notebooks, and the brand of notebook that I have been most happy with is Acer. I read/reply in the Apple forum simply because I also own a G4 iBook, but unfortunately, I don't like my Apple as much as I do my Acer.

I guess if someone were to post "Which Apple computer should I buy?", then I guess only Apple computers would be suggested. But as an Apple owner, and also talking to a lot of other Apple owners, I am really beginning to think that Apple computers are quite over hyped. By no means are they bad computers, but I personally think that there are other brands that offer much more bang for the buck. And I guess, considering all the other recommendations within this forum, I take it, that I am not the only one that thinks this.

I would recommend an Apple Computer. They offer great "bang for the buck." My 1st generation g4 powerbook is still going strong and performs very well (purchase in the first quarter of '01). Acers are a good value, but for their size they are kind of a let-down (low screen resolution). I favor the iBook over comparable PCs because it has better batterylife and dedicated graphics. That said, I recently purchased a new Dell 8600 and, aside from the size and lack of a well-integrated bluetooth solution (Microsoft's fault), I am very happy with it.

I agree Apple does offer strong bang for the buck because the quality of the chasis/casing is nearly unmatched. As for screen resolution and battery life, I disagree. My Travelmate 800 has over 5 hours of battery life and has a screen resolution of 1400x1050. My brand new iBook doesn't even match my 2 year old Acer when it comes to battery life, and the 17" power book has a lower resolution than my 15" Acer.

But what I do believe Apple does offer better than PC's is compatibility and quality in construction. iTunes, iChat, iCal are stuff that are gold! I also like how the hardware is designed. I am amazed at the how the screen latch retracts itself! I'm just not so much impressed with its features compared to my Acer(ie. built-in memory stick reader, smart card security system, high res screen, long battery life, hard drive shock protection, 4 USB ports, etc.) and their ability to package it into something that is 5.5 pounds and thinner than my iBook!

Just adding my 2 cents, after using the ibook for the past month or so i am really satisfied with it. but the ibook is probably the most i would recommend someone wanting a notebook. after that the powerbooks are overpriced for the regular user unless they really need it, otherwise dell has some great offerings.
