I am going away to college next fall and well i really dont trust my dorm room being locked when i am away. Now i could careless about my PS3 and my wii. but honestly my laptop is my everything. I take it with me wherever but incase i am going out saturday night i would like to feel safe that my laptop isnt going anywhere. Now both of these locks are made of steel cabling. Now how good are these locks? Can you guys recommend something better?

The lock isn't the part that's going to break. The part that'll break is your laptop - the lock slot is a whole 2 millimeters of standard plastic.

If you're really concerned, buy Lojack.

ohhh so if someone where to yank it the laptop would break not the lock. Hmm lojack sounds good. But here is the question. I have a password set for my macbook. So anybody cant use it unless they know the password. Now what happens if the user does something like reinstall the software or maybe replaces the HD.

Then lojack is pointless. Another thing you might want to do besides buying a lock is writing down serial numbers from the computer, hard drive, and ram sticks. It might seem like its over doing it, but what if they do swap the HD? Then you have the serial numbers of the computer, and ram sticks to prove its yours.

Any laptop I've seen, always have metal behind the plastic for the lock slot.

The lock holes don't work for anything more than a deterrent to opportunity thieves. I've had enough laptops stolen from the display shelves when I worked at BB to know that.

Fair enough, but to say there is only 2mm of plastic is misleading.

I agree with Khris, there is definitely metal behind the plastic. It will do fine if you were to leave your laptop for a couple of minutes... but not anyplace overnight...

Reinstalling the operating system will take out your passwords and render them useless.

Same for replacing the hard drive.

Some of the newer Dell's have LoJack right in the BIOS so reinstalling the OS or even replacing the HD won't make a difference.

Having said that, I personally wouldn't waste my time or money on it. The company I work for invested in "Computrace" (before it became LoJack) and out of the 10-12 laptops that were stolen, we got ZERO back.
