I thought i'd pass this along. I can't take credit for this as someone of the macrumors forum answered my question. I wanted a way to power off the iPad without using the Lock button which either Boots or puts the iPad in sleep mode.

Here's the solution which never requires touching the Home or Lock button ever again:

"If you go into settings -> general -> accessibility then turn assistive touch on. You can then go onto that menu and into device and if you hold lock screen it should give you the slide to unlock. Its quite a bit of effort to turn off your phone but if you don't want to jailbreak it. Could set assistive touch to triple click the home button to make it a bit faster."

Yeah I learned this using my iPhone 4 when my lock/power button broke and wouldn't do anything. Very useful :D
