Just added another MacBook Pro to the family (for the wifey), and a Mac Mini as my HTPC connected to a 4TB RAID. The Mini is ADORABLE. I got the 1.83Ghz Core2Duo, 1GB DDR2, 80GB 5400rpm model, and it's blazing fast once I upgraded it to 2GB DDR2 and a 160GB 5400rpm drive. And it's so quiet!

    Just wanted to share! :D :D :D

    Congrats, WilliamG!

Did you pay Apple for the RAM or did you get out your putty knives? ;)

I just bought another, myself. Scored a used (and pretty beat up) 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo 15.4" MBP. Got it from work - we decommissioned it since it is dented/banged up and the screen hinges broke (the user REALLY mistreated this machine) but everything works fine on it. I got it at a great price, and since my daughter has fallen in love with OS X since playing around with my iMac and my 17" MBP, I figured I'd get her one to use herself. Funny thing is - she's just like me: she doesnt want to give up her Dell Inspiron (I'm a pack rat when it comes to computer equipment!)

I broke out the putty knife. It was quite the mission, but mission success! I ordered last week, and got the Mini for just over $400 delivered brand new on eBay after 25% cashback, and the MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz Penryn brand new for $1495 delivered after the (Live.com promotion of) 25% cashback. Can't complain about that! :D Both with valid warranties till August 2009 (before I Applecare them!).

The Mini is just so, so cute. I got a pair Western Digital Studio II 2TB drives and daisy-chained them via firewire, both in RAID1 for maximum data protection.

Sorry to go off topic, but I've always wondered about this.

    [hijack]
Can you buy applecare before your 1 year is up to effectively get 4 years of coverage (1 year limited + 3 years of applecare)?

I know if you purchase applecare along with the Mac the 1 year limited warranty overlaps with the first year of applecare coverage, as explained on their site.

Just wondering if there was a way to effectively maximize warranty coverage. :D

Congratulations on the new shinys. There are a million worse obsessions to have. Was thinking about getting a mini for torrenting during the nighttime but gotta save money for more courses and an iMac someday. Enjoy the new family members.

No worries! No it's 3 years total, so the Applecare extends it another 2 years over the first, and gives you telephone support for the full first year and the extended 2.

Gosh, it was so easy to set up screen sharing and transfer stuff over the network from Mac to Mac. This is a big change from my previous Windows XP-powered Shuttle cube HTPC (SN27P2) - which exploded a few days ago. Power supply caught fire. Nice! Much less misery so far now with the Mini, and Plex is fantastic at playing back all sorts of movie/TV-related files.

I just finished university, actually, with a BA in journalism. I'm just fairly careful with my money, and did well some years ago selling some things when the market was right. And no, no debt. Except a mortgage on my house. *sigh*

And didn't your parents teach you not ask strangers personal questions? :p
