I heard the airport card in macbooks has trouble connecting to the interent using a 3rd party router like linksye. I heard a patch helps this problem but still it doesnt work. Will my linksye that has B enabled work with the macbook. Its a wireless G but my laptop says its running off of b. dont ask. so will it work???

The Airport card connects with most third party routers. I don't recommend getting an Airport Extreme anyways. Linksys, D-Link have much cheaper routers.

So I wouldn't worry about it. If that Linksys is any common router it will most likely connect with the MacBook.

No idea why your laptop would say its using B if you bought that exact router (which clearly says 802.11G). The MacBook should read it as G.

If your laptop is old, then it will only have a wireless B card. My old Dell laptop (circa 2002) only has an 802.11b enabled card, so that's all it can use. If, however, it actually is an 802.11g card, then you should be able to search around in your Windows settings and make sure it is actually set up to use 802.11g.

Is the Airport Extreme not a good router or just overly expensive?

Its decent, but it costs alot because it has features many people might not use (external HD access, etc) They are nice features, byt why buy a 200 dollar router when you only need a 39.99 dollar one and the work the same?

Nah, I was just asking. I need a new router anyway to make use of 802.11n so I thought I'd ask.

Its a good router, but I don't see the need to spend the extra money for it when the only purpose I have for it is to connect to the internet. So its a good router but there are cheaper options out there.

I used my Macbook with a D-Link router without issue. The biggest threat to Airport cards working is the updates that Apple puts out for them. If you ever get a good one, do yourself a favor and never update it again.
