But when I went to the Apple Store, they were sold out of 15" models. :(

I have two stores in the local area, so I'm just gonna call everyday to see if they have them, and then speed like hell over and buy one!

ordering online is good and reliable...it worked ok for me, but it's a pain in the a** if you have to return it...

Whether you buy online or from a local Apple Store, you can return your machine for repair, or exchange it, but it's much easier to do so at an actual brick and mortar store.

Apple does not accept returns of CUSTOMIZED or PERSONALIZED items. If you order online, you are CUSTOMIZING your computer :)

My MBP was ordered online, it was the SR MBP 15'' base model available in the stores, but it was still treated as CUSTOMIZED because I ordered online.

Then please inform Apple that mistakes were made when first my 15" PB, and later, a MacPro were returned (and replaced without any hassles). Each was bought online and "customized."

Im pretty sure that even if you order the stock online they will not replace it in store for you. it's a pain because they have to send you the labels then you have to ship it off to them and so on...just takes a lot of time.
