I can't save TextEdit on a certain user. It says I don't have permission.

    It says:
"To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info."

I do see some solution here but I'm too busy right now to do all that: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

What could I use for some light note taking?

Changing permissions takes seconds. Just find the document you're trying to write to in Finder, right click on it, select Get Info, and give yourself write permission. Same thing if you're trying to save a new file to a directory with the wrong permissions: find the directory in Finder, right click -> Get Info, change permission. This assumes you should have access to the directory in the first place.
