    Enjoy :).

If you haven't configured Mail at all yet, then you won't be able to access Preferences yet. Just follow these steps then:

Enter 'pop.gmail.com' in the 'Incoming Mail Server:' field.
Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') in the 'User Name:' field.
Enter your Gmail password in the 'Password:' field.
For the 'Outgoing Mail Server,' and enter 'smtp.gmail.com' in the 'Outgoing Mail Server:' field.

Don't think there's anything stopping you from using multiple accounts on Mail.

I'm still having trouble setting up my Gmail account. When I type in outgoing mail "smtp.gmail.com", I get a note saying that "smtp.gmail.com" is not responding. What do I do now? Please help. Thank you!

You need to Enable POP in GMail. That was Step #1 from the link Sam provided.

Now that I have created a new account, how do I switch between my .mac account and Gmail account. It doesn't distinguish between the 2 accounts. Please explain? Thank you!

Click on the arrow head next to the inbox and you'll be able to select which account's emails you want to view.
