Hey you guys, I'm just doing some GTA IV experiments, and I've found people who would over clock their CPUs for like 2-300Mhz and gain significant FPS increases, so I was just wondering:

How do I over clock my CPU in Windows XP SP3 (through bootcamp)??

Do I need to use a certain software, or enter the bios or what?

    Cheers!
(oh and by the way, I know about the whole heat and cooling and so on, so please no flaming) :D

are you talking about CPU or GPU? It's incredibly uncommon to oc notebook cpu.

search google for this one, plenty of stuff around, should be like ocing any other notebook in windows, just watch your temps. also on a side note, are the 9600m gt running at stock speed or are they slighty underclocked like the 8600m gt?

GTA IV does appear to be quite a cpu hog, you should see how much cpu is being used in its in game benchmark, because if it isnt very high, might not be worth the oc. getting GTA IV for xmas should be interesting how it runs on my mbp, really dont want to oc anything.

as far as i know, you would normally overclock your cpu in the bios. since macs dont have bios, i dunno how you would do it. coolbook(rightname?) can undervolt via software so maybe it is possible to do it via software.

Can the 9400M be overclocked? This would perhaps be of interest to MacBook owners.

The macbook and macbook pro are both horrible designs for overclocking as the fan systems are not nearly as strong as the good strong systems designed for performance and gaming that are in some other notebooks.

Heat and overclocking = damage. More cooling = better.

The MBP already gets hot when gaming...if you OC it it'll probably melt or blow up lol.

The 9600M GT does not appear to be underclocked in the MBP.

MBP has 500MHz core/1250MHz shader/792MHz memory while nVidia official clocks are 500MHz core/1250MHz shader/800MHz memory.

I believe there is a patch in the works for GTA IV and drivers are still immature. Things should hopefully improve on the software side over time. Although this yet again questions the quality of console ports since the PS3 has something like a 7800GTX and the 360 has basically a X1800XT.

    Use Nvidia System Tools

You can overclock CPU and both GPU at the same time

    Fantastic improvment in GTA4

    My 2.8 unibody now runs @ 3.1

you do know that overclocking increases temperature level and high temps decrease notebook life

Not True! I used to HEAVILY overclock my MBP (15 inch 256mb Santa Rosa. I should have the benchmarks still buried somewhere in these forums) and, as long as you reach a stable temperature that is under the manufacturers suggested temps you are fine.

You can find those recommended temps on each manufacturers websites.

P.S.- I typed this on said MBP :)

Overclocking DOES increase temperature and it DOES decrease notebook life, as is the case with almost any piece of material experiencing thermal cycling like the CPU does. Physics proves it's true, and well, yes your parts slowly die when they are hotter than usual.

    So, it is True!

    :)

Well what I meant is as long as you stay within the limits the manufacturer states, you shouldn't notice a difference.

    Happy?

Oh of course not, you most likely won't notice death if you are keeping yourself in safe limits :D

    Happy!
