If I remember correctly, when I muted my system before shutdown or restart, it wouldn't make the bootup sound. Why don't you try that?

I've been using this really small program that specifically controls the startup sound. It places a control pane in Settings; it's very easy to use and it works. You can download it here and I use latest version (1.1b2). I've never had any issues with it running in Leopard; it's awesome.

I used to use the method mentioned above but I kept forgetting to turn down the audio before shut down and needless to say I'd get a heart attack every time my machine started (esp since I had the volume up watching or listening to something the previous session). :)

Apple really should have a separate audio control for the startup sound built-into Leopard, like the application above.

If you're unsure about it during class, just plug some headphones in before powering up.

Yea, I agree with ATC, I use the startup sound prefrence pane, and it works really well.

The only time that it doesn't work, is if OSX/the computer fully lockups, then sometimes it will bootup with the sound at the volume level.

yeah, it works, from what ive gathered googling around, is that the prefpane runs a script that mutes your volume before you logoff and again after you login, therefore, when the system locks up, it cant perform the script

I turned down the volume before i shut down, so when it boots...the boot up sound is so faint i can hardly hear it....i always keep my volume level at 1 as I already have external speakers

    Finally! Thx!
Hopefully it will save me some embarrassing moments in class (i.e. turning the laptop on during an incredibly boring lecture...)

yeah its an absolute joke there is nothing in system preferences for this, and plugging in headphones doesn't do anything the sound still comes out of the speakers, i say this is a little bit of apple arrogance.

The Startup Sound app works perfectly for me.

But once in a while, I do wish for moments like this:

But there's no shortage of talented mac users out there who fix these things themselves and share their work (like the application on page one of this thread). :)

And yes, apple should have done this themselves instead of relying on the public.

Nice one, had to agree with you too....if that sound came on, people will be turning around to look at it.....as I have said, turn off the volume did it for me.
