User folders are stored under /Users. If the account has been deleted, but not the files, you can delete them from /Users/whatever-user

If the computer is new enough, you should actually be able to get Mavericks. It's free from the Mac App Store and will work on any MacBook Pro from 2008 and up. If you have a regular MacBook, then you can install it on any system late 2008 and up. Beware though, if you have a white MacBook from 2008, that computer uses the Intel X3100 GPU and is incompatible with Mavericks. The only MacBook from 2008 that will work with Mavericks is the late 2008 aluminum unibody MacBook. You can also consult Apple's support page as well as many community-driven sites for more information.
