I have been trying for days to figure out how Finder works in OS X. Where on earth is the UP button to see the folder containing the current folder? Thanks in advance!

You can either navigate in column view, or use the address bar at the bottom of the Finder window.

Path Bar isn't defaultly enabled in OS X.
To enable, go up to "View" > "Show Path Bar"
The Path bar will show up at the bottom of the Finder window as Budding has described.

The other methods are right-clicking(or Control-Click) on the Title(usually the folder or drive name) of the Finder Window. The breadcrumb menu will show there, the alternate method is actually hitting the path button (3 lines and a down arrow).

This is the absolute easiest way to go up a folder and I'm kinda surprised no one else suggested it sooner.
