I have my dock visible at all times at the bottom of the screen, a lot of people I know have it hidden at the bottom, and you do save a lot of space. I've also seen people with docks on the left hand side, but never on the right.

How do you have your dock positioned?

Mine is hidden, at the bottom.
I'm trying to rely more and more on Alfred to launch my apps. It works phenomenally, as long as I remember to use it. LOL.

On the bottom, hidden. Once I launch an app, I use the trackpad or corners to utilize Spaces so it allows fast switching instead of constantly going down to the dock.

I keep my dock on the left, always visible, and I minimize windows into the application icon and use HyperDock for window previews and iTunes controls.
