I need to disable S/PDIF output for me to properly use my gaming headset since the mic gives off a weird buzzing/beeping noise in the background. The headset is the Steelseries 5HV2, they don't have any mac drivers. I've used the drivers on my Windows 7 partition and there is an option in there that allows me to disable it however I am looking for a way to disable S/PDIF on OSX. Any help is appreciated.

Under the utilities you have a Audio MIDI Setup where you can change the port settings.

Can you mute the apple, select source. But it sounds like the gain is turned up too high.

Can you tell me how I can fix this with a detailed response? I'm not the most educated when it comes to OSX, been a windows guy for most of my life.

Sorry for the delay getting back I've been a little busy.

With the Steelseries 5HV2 headset connected open the Audio MIDI Setup system preferences. Choose the source (left panel), and which should be the "built in mic". Then select the mute box. This should kill the apple's built in mic.

I have only used these settings when I was importing LP's to my MBP. I had to select a different source, and killing the mic.

As I was doing that the buzzing seemed to worsen, I unplugged the headset and plugged it back in, now the buzzing is out of control, I reverted all the settings to how they we're before no luck. I have no idea what is going on at this point.

disconnect your power cable. it's a common problem with laptops - they get interference from the ac power supply.

No buddy it's not, that's for the audio output I need to disable S/PDIF....clearly you haven't read the post, saying that the buzzing is from the mic, the adapter has nothing to do with anything it's the fact that I need to disable S/PDIF
