I'm looking to upgrade my MBP substantially. 4gigs of ram and now it comes to the HDD question: which is the biggest hdd I can fit into it (capacity wise of course)

And if maybe you can find some links that would be most appreciated!

    Cheers!

    Fujitsu/Toshiba/Samsung with 250 Gbs at 5400 upm

    or

Hitachi 7k200, 200 Gb, 7200 upm when speed is a must.

As for your question: I´m not aware of any limit in size itself. The only thing you might want to have an official word about is, if 12,5 mm 2,5" drives are compatible (housingwise spoken).

There are 320GB HDDs on the market now. Can't remember if they're 4200 or 5400 rpm. The Toshiba ones coming out in Nov will be 5400 rpm though.

Is the hard drive something that is user replaceable?

Sadly not without voiding the warranty as for the MBP.

I´m only aware of: 300 Gbs = 4200 upm; 250 Gbs = 5400 upm and 200 Gbs = 7200 upm. Be sure to update to the latest firmware revision if planning to get one of the bigger Samsung models.

FYI - I followed the directions on the following website to replace my 120 gig hard drive with a 250 gig 5400 rpm hard drive. Everything went exactly as explained in the directions and it's been working perfectly ever since I swapped it out about 3 months ago.

    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Pro/Hard-Drive/85/5/

At the time, that was the biggest hard drive I could find.

I'm also running VM's for WinXP and Vista via Parallels - hence, that's why I needed a big hard drive. As a software developer, I need to test apps in Vista, but I'm still running WinXP as my development OS.

As soon as SP1 for Vista is released, I'll probably switch over permanently to Vista.

Sorry, should've been a bit more specific. There are 320GB 5400rpm drives out available through select distributors (i.e Dell and Alienware). They're not freely available for consumers on the market though.

The Toshiba one will be publicly released in November, as mentioned above.

Not in the MBP. The hard drive is user replaceable in the MacBook, but on the MBP, only the RAM can be changed without voiding the warranty.
