When i open videos is there any way to force them to open in the default media player instead of opening withing the browser? On my PC I could open any video in its default player but I cannot figure out how to do this on the mac.

right click the file, or click "get info" with the file selected. In the "open with' bar, select a program, then select "use this for all files of this type"

In your browser, it'll depend on the browser you use, but there should be a "manage file type" button in preferences somewhere.

Either set it to whatever ou want, or disable quicktime's plugin, or something.

.mpgs are by default viewed with the QuickTime plugin. In OSX go to System Preferences (usually on the dock) -> QuickTime ->Browser and uncheck "Play movies automatically"
