So i'm having a issue with my santa rosa mbp. I left for dinner and left my notebook on. Naturally the machine went to sleep. After i came back the machine would not boot up, the screen doesn't even turn on. The light on the latch release remains on. When i try a hard reboot, i'm having the same issue. Black screen, doesn't even get to the grey screen with the apple logo. I've tried going on 1 dimm or ram to see if it's a issue with the ram and still doesn't fix it. Anybody have any idea?

Try pulling the Battery, leave it out for about 20 secs. then try to boot it up without the Battery via Charger only.

If that doesn't work, Swap the memory modules and try booting again. Also try an external monitor via DVI port and see if you get picture.

Okay i tried all that and it's still dead. I also just swapped my 320GB Western Digital back to the factory and it still isn't responding. I'm going to bring it to the apple store and hopefully it's related to my video card and they will replace it.

Just as a FYI to everyone. I brought it to the apple store, they diagnosed that the video card is dead and they will be replacing my logic board.

Do this. You need to reset the SMC on the Macbook Pro.

1 . Take out the battery.. ( Do not attach the power cord )
    2. Make sure no 3rd part devices are currently connected.. printers. External HD ect..
    3. Hold the power button for 10 seconds..

    - Put it all back together and it should work fine.

Apple Stores are so purdy and the fact it is a unified offering in hardware/software/service/support and that the stores are tentacles of the Apple head does have its merits.

When it comes to GPU issues in a Macbook or a Macbook pro resetting the SMC is pointless. You need to reset the PRAM instead.

    1. Turn off the computer complete.
    2. Start the computer and hold the following.. "Apple button / Command, option button, the 'P' button and the 'R" button.
    3. Keep holding the following buttons while the computer boots up until you hear 2 thats TWO chimes.
    4. Release all the buttons until he computer boots up normally.

That should help with any video related issues.

I had a friend with an older 17" MBP with the 8600gt.. recently the graphics had gone all wonky, but it was still usable, just kind of blurry and weird looking. I thought maybe it was the display because the external video out worked just fine... but Apple replaced the motherboard and it works fine now.
