You don't turn off a Mac, you just close the lid.
Also, what are the specs of your Mac? Mine starts up in about 25 seconds (login screen).

How long exactly is it from the moment you press the Power button to when you're on the Login screen? I usually get around 20 seconds.

And I agree with Budding, put your Mac to sleep most of the time instead of full shutdown. To sleep, just close the lid, or press the power button once (while the Mac is on) and select Sleep.

Untuned OS X will normally boot faster then untuned XP or Vista and tends to stay cleaner/faster over time but both OS's are subject to the programs or OS bits you have enabled that load during the boot or startup process.

If you have auto login enabled you might take a look in System Prefs > Accounts > Login items. Disableing anything you don't need will speed things up.

If you have auto login disabled and the slowness it up to the login prompt things are a little more complex and Activity monitor and Google will be your friend in ferreting out things you may not need.

Since I've pressed the power button on my Mac Pro a total of 3 times since I've owned it (February this year), and restarted it one additional time for an OS update, I wouldn't really know much about how bad the startup times are.

I would just leave it in sleep mode while you aren't using it.

A few things that may or may not help. More RAM and a faster hard drive. The faster the drive, the quicker it will load.

However, RAM may partially slow it down on startup. I'm not sure if the MacBook does error correction on startup like my Mac Pro, but after I added 4GB to my tower, the grey apple stays on about 10-15 seconds longer, but the progress bar is 5-10 seconds quicker.

I would take a stop watch and time it, and let us know how long it takes exactly.
