As some of you know, I'm still undecided weather to go for a MacBook Pro or Vista Notebook.

I currently own a PC but work on a new Mac Pro (The Beast) in college.

Ive been browsing eBay, and came across THIS....

The price seems VERY good indeed, but i need to know is it a new model?

    are the specs very good?

    Should i go for it?

    Thanks.

That's the top of the line 15" MBP. That's an insane deal if it's legit. If it is legitimate(100% feedback from 151 responders), then I'd be all over that. Hell, if you end up getting it and come back saying it's a good deal, I'd be willing to buy one at that price(less than 1500 USD, plus shipping(probably around a hundred or so, still cheap)).

    Definitely worth looking into.

100% scam. Don't even think of sending any money. Ofcourse you could try and buy shoes (that was his last sale!!).

Test him by asking to collect the laptop yourself. I bet he will refuse.

I hate eBay. That deal looks too good to be true. Look at the last item sold - leather boots. WTF?!!!

Check out the NBR Guide to Avoiding Scams on eBay. And thank ejl for saving you $$$. ;)

Scam. There is no way he has that many for that price short of stealing them.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I wouldn't buy one myself without having seen somebody get one successfully from him first.

Of course, if I had stolen 20 Macbook pros and wanted to sell them on ebay, I'd be putting them at a really low price, too.

I agree. "Grey market" in the best case. There's no reason for a guy to sell Macs far cheaper than they'd go for normally when they'll easily sell at a much higher price. Oh, and lookit this: "PayPal buyer protection doesn't apply to this item." Hmm... "other" payment options, you say? :p

This is what he just emailed me:

    Dear friends:
Please be assured, the project is the real Apple notebook. It can work in the United Kingdom normal.
    Transportation projects in China!
My only acceptable form of payment: International bank transfers.
    Thank you!

If he only takes international bank transfers, it's got to be a scam. Report him immediately.

I agree. Electronic bank transfers are very expensive, and that's not a viable payment method for most people.

The generic response also sets off a flaming red flag.

Yeah, it is definitely a scam no questions about it. I advertise sometimes on craigslist and get many people claiming to be from the UK and who offer to give me a few grand, but they want my bank account number and name and address etc... At first I thought this was legit, but learned from a friend(who happened to see a story on the news) that it was a scam.

Basically they are looking for an international bank transfer, and somehow get your bank account information and perform identity theft. Everytime I refresh my ad on craigslist, most people who respond are the same people with similar messages. So: 1) Stay away from people who want to do bank transfers in any way 2)Stay away from dealers from the UK, because from my experience, all people who do this scam claim to be from the United Kingdom.

    Hope this helps.

I don't believe it. That price is simply too low for that machine. Don't go for it, its not worth the (expected) trouble in the future.

Yea...if he only had one for sale, that'd be more believable - there are ways to get single macbook pros for extremely cheap or free--but to have 16 of them in stock at that price? Highly doubtful.

As others have mentioned, the payment method, lack of security, and the fact the the user only sold shoes up until now are highly suspicious.

As a general rule of thumb, you don't give away private bank account numbers to others. There's just no legitimate need to for just about any type of private transaction.

You've also gotta wonder why someone from the UK has such horrible English :p
