My Macbook Pro won't complete the start cycle. Apple logo appears on screen, but remains there indefinitely. There's a movie DVD in drive, if that matters? I've seen posts suggesting to restart in Command-S mode, then follow instructions for commands, but that black screen with white text gives no commands. I've also seen posts saying remove battery, but I don't have that tiny screwdriver needed. Any other suggestions, please?

turn on the machine, hold down option key (alt)
when the image of your hard drive with os x comes up, let go of alt. select your hard drive with the mouse or maybe arrow keys, hit enter. -
Try booting without the DVD in the drive (turn computer on, hold down Mouse Button).
Safe Boot - To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:
1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
This will run a bunch of diagnostic self-tests and book to your desktop. If you get this far, simply reboot and you should be good to go.
Disk Utility - Boot to the DVD with the OS. Select a language. Next screen, the taskbar will populate with options. Under the Installer or Utilities menu, select Disk Utility.
1. Verify Permissions/Repair Permissions
2. Select the HDD (the top most listing, not Macintosh HD) and do Repair Disk
Give all that a try and report back with your findings.
