I think Apple is making another mistake with the new line of MB by not including HDMI.

Steve Jobs claims that "HDMI lacks higher resolutions."

This is not a good excuse. I can hook up my Gateway P-7811FX to my 47" LCD via HDMI with ease and feed both audio/video with one cable. At 1920x1200" which is 1080P, I am not asking for resolutions any higher. I can game and watch video just fine and I was hoping the new Macbook will have HDMI so I can make the Macbook Pro my main Home Theatre device.

Oh yea, I'm sure Steve would rather have people buy the weak sauce Apple iTV which has a HDMI, than use a Macbook for watching video on a big screen TV.

Steve also wants to avoid paying another royalty or component cost to include HDMI.

Displayport assures that all new Macbook owners will be forced to buy that overpriced expensive 24" Apple display and Steve knows that there are nobody on the market with one yet except Apple. Or else pay the $100 dongle.

    Good marketing strategy, Steve!

HDMI 1.3 supports up to 2560x1600 and HDMI spec prior only supproted 1920x1200...

DisplayPort can support up to 4096x2160. DP is getting pushed by Intel, Nvdia, Dell, ATI, etc... It's new. It should be cheaper than HDMI. It will allow us to offload the monitor chip processor onto the DP transmitter...

there seems to be an overall good amount of advantages to DP but I'm not sure about it yet. It doesn't seem to support the resolutions of some of the TVs that companies have been showing off lately (not sure the actual resolution number, but quoted as 4x that of 1080p).

I believe they should be including DP -> DVI adapters. That should be a no brainer for apple. Bad apple, bad!

The only people that are buying the Cinema Display are those who will actually gain an advantage using those or other high end displays (i.e. high level graphic designers/artists and photographers). They are not made for everyday user. And its technically not that overpriced when compared to other high end art monitors.

It pisses me off more that the new MB is so **** expensive.

    So can HDMI 1.3.

FIY... have you ever noticed how much of a PITA it is to shop for HDMI switching receivers? If you're on the low end (<$500) most of the receivers will only accept stereo over HDMI. Terrible...

But I'm tired of seeing products with incomplete or half finished specs... *looking at you blu-ray and HDMI!*

However, HDMI is here today on just about every TV and AV device will be soon as common as the USB port.

Apple is picking Displayport mini similar to picking Firewire over USB in the past. Apple users will be stuck researching and paying for more just to "connect" their Macbooks with other devices.

ATI, Nvidia and Intel have said DP will be on future cards/chips. Gateway is starting to include DP.

Firewire and USB is a bad analogy.

It's not like you can't connect your MB/MBP to a tv with HDMI. It just costs about $50 to do.

*note* trying not to sound like an apologist. I think HDMI should be on this gen. If DP gets more popular and is going to overcome HDMI, then go for it... But HDMI is on virtually everything right now.

Yea, as much as hdmi would be nice. If it came down to it, would you rather have hdmi or dp?

The obvious answer is dp. You can do more with it, can still get hdmi. For space saving purposes, it makes the most sense.

There will be DP to HDMI converters soon, just as there are DVI to HDMI now. DisplayPort is pretty new, so stuff is hard to find, but I think it will really take off more than HDMI, especially in the computer space. It offer higher resolutions, is smaller, and is cheaper. Dell and I think Lenovo already have some DisplayPort monitors out, so Apple isn't the only one. It will become much more popular in the future IMO.

    I agree.

I just hope Mini DP to HDMI cable will be cheap.

It probably won't be at first, especially from Apple or big box stores. But give it a few months, and you'll probably be able to pick one up off of newegg for a few bucks. I bought my DVI to HDMI adapter for like $3 I think, so I would expect it to be similar once the designs get out there.

consumer electronics are moving to hdmi. computers are moving to displayport. there are a number of advantages to displayport and I think apple actually got this one right.

I have an HDMI switching receiver that came with a full 5.1 surround sound for 450$. The receiver alone would probably be around 200$. I hardly consider that 500$, I don't know where you're looking but it's obviously in the wrong place.

Most of them run about 250-300$ standalone. Mine doesn't have the problem you mention.

    I didn't say all.

Crutchfield and others, most of the models do not support surroudn audio through HDMI. There are Sony, Denon and Onkyos that have some models that require separate connection for audio. Kinda messed up...
