October 23rd, 2001 was the launch of the first iPod. Today it is its 6th birthday!

And with this birthday, I'd like to bring up one post on MacRumors back in 2001 that really summed up a lot of the feeling when this first launched:

And bring out the video of the original introduction of the iPod. How low key this was, compared to the Moscone Center keynotes of today, eh? ;)

    <object width='425' height='366'><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kN0SVBCJqLs&rel=1&border=0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kN0SVBCJqLs&rel=1&border=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width='425' height='366'></embed></object>

And of course, a simple comparison ;):

Thanks Sam... that's a cool video. Actually, I'm surprised how similar it is to Jobs's presentations today. More low-key, sure, but pretty much the same style.

Oh yeah... does Steve Jobs own any other clothes?

Also, Apple is bigger than IBM as of today in terms of market cap. Probably doesn't mean much to most of you, but for those of us who remember the '80s or earlier... it's a sign of the times. And the iPod deserves a lot of the credit for that.

I have and still use my Gen 1 5GB iPod.

I won't let myself get a new one until it breaks, although, truthfully, I was going to get an iPod touch until I saw they messed it up royal by using 8GB and 16GB flash ram. Just not enough storage for video use. Oh well, Gen 1 lives!

The Crowds in the audience has grown. Sounds like they have found the perfect recipe.

The iPod is the one thing I really loved when it first came out. Why? Because it was "Mac Only" just like iTunes. Nice to have bragging rights, :D for a while at least.

Nice post. Isn't that the same room that he unveiled the Alu iMacs and iLife 08/iWork 08 in on august 7?

Nice stuff, but that cake is going a little too far...
    I mean seriously, a cake?

That wasn't a cake for the celebration of the iPod :D...that was just a random birthday cake shaped like an iPod I found off Google...I mean, I baked myself :p.

0.2 inches thick....really really thin....now the iPod Touch, a mere 8 mm thick...incredible how much technology has advanced in just 6 years.

Indeed...from 160x128 B&W 2-inch screen on the first iPod, to a 480x320, 163 ppi, full colour 3.5-inch touchscreen on the iPod Touch. Innovation.

EDIT: Oh, and of course, Steve said this himself..."We started off with 1000 songs in your pocket. Today with the new 160 GB iPod Classic, its 40'000 songs in your pocket."

I wonder what's going to happen in the near future... How are they going to make the iPod any thinner than it currently is?

Also, yesterday was Mole Day! (the scientific one)

Smaller flash memory...and maybe shrinking the size of the components. They'll find some way :D.

I'm interested in seeing what Apple will do for the second generation iPhone and iPod Touch. Mostly seeing what they plan to do with the design.
