Hi everyone. I've been using my MB for 2 months now (Unibody Aluminium model) and its beginning to get stained in some areas (mainly due to sweat and a stupid incident where I unknowingly handled my MB while having some dark grease on my hands) Suffice to say whats the best solution (sorry pun unintended) to this problem.

how do you keep your Mac shiny and gleaming as new. What cloths, liquids , techniques do you use.
Post up links, pics other info if you want to share how good a product is.

PS. Sorry if this is a re post!

Honestly, nothing. I just use my hand to swipe away the dust.

Then again, it hasn't really moved from my desk. Add to the fact that it has the Invisible Shield applied to it.

Don't even think about using chemicals of any kind. This forum has seen several poor souls who used strong chemicals like Windex on their LCD screens and utterly destroyed them. Just use a microfiber cloth moistened with water.

Windex does not kill screens... I`ve been using it on my screens for over 3 years without any problems. That guy who broke his screen with windex sprayed so of the stuff on it probably seeped in the area between the screen and the bezel, damaging the electronics inside.

Guessing you have a white macbook? Any electronics that are white are just asking to be stained over time.

Me, I just use spit to clean it. (No I dont spit ON it, but i guess technically its just saliva, lol)

Although my screen is really dusty, and dont really notice it at home with power connected, but when out and trying to save battery with brightness down, it can get annoying.

Technically the OP has not had his Unibody Mac for 2 months since it's only been out for 6 weeks. :p

Anyways a good microfiber cloth lightly dampened with water, shut down the Mac and wipe the keys and body, very easy. Just don't use any solvents.

Even with the new Macbooks/Macbook Pro's? If I remember correctly Jobs said the screens were made from glass. And Windex is meant to be used on glass, no? :D

I have seen 2 or 3 threads in the past where Windex left a large streak across the LCD panel. Perhaps it depends on the materials used for the display, or the formula for the cleaner itself. Either way, it's not worth the risk.

I use warm water with a little bit of vinegar. I use this with a paper towel. I'm always very careful to use only a very slightly damp paper towel.

Just wanted to clarify here, are we talking about the screen, or the body of the MBP?

I assumed it was the body (since he never mentioned the screen anywhere in the OP, and also i thought he mentioned discolouring?)

So yea, maybe specify which you're talking about when you reply. I wouldnt use spit on my lcd, but i do on the body.

Use the black cloth that came with the laptop. If it gets real dirty, I soak the cloth wet and wipe the whole glass screen and dry it.

    Microfiber cloth ftw. :)

Make sure to turn it off, unplug, and only use a little bit of water.

Turning off wouldn't be necessary. Just wet the microfiber towel, I think the biggest mistake that causes physical damage is actually spraying/wetting the actual unit rather than the cleaning cloth.

Windex damages the anti-glare coating on matte screens.

I dampen a microfiber cloth with lukewarm water for the screen. Then I use another microfiber cloth to dry the screen.

Vinegar on a micro cloth is great for the screen. Never spray it directly on the machine. Lemon for difficult stains. I brought a white ibook back to life with lemon. It just cuts grease and oil without chemicals. Don't waste money on those cleaning kits. Lemons are cheaper and more effective.

A simple soft cloth that's dampened slightly is all I use to wipe the shell and screen. For the keyboard, I take Isopropyl Alcohol and a q-tip to clean off each key. The alcohol doesn't damage the backlights on the keys. Oh, and make sure you remove the battery first before cleaning. :D

For the Aluminum casing on my MB, I just use the micro-fiber cloth that came with it and just a tad bit of saliva. That'll do the trick. :)

Cleaning tips are provided in the small user manual that came with you macbook, if it ruins your computer then it's Apple's fault as you follow their tips....while other things you do are on your own risks.
