Hi, I just run out of space on my Lacie external drive that was used by Time Machine to backup my laptop. Can you please recommend some HDD and write if it is worth spending 2x on Time Capsule and forget about cables (it sounds handy for a laptop).

    Thanks!

Hey ANTDOD, what laptop do tou have, what kind of capacity are you looking for, is it to be used exclusively for Timemachine or are you holding other media on it and do you have a preferred interface (firewire/usb/esata)?.

I like my western digital. I just spent $78 for my WD passport 160 GB or you can get 250 GB for about $100. It is small portable and USB powered.

I wouldn't bother buying a Time Capsule as it's not as easy to change HD's if you run out of room. If you're looking for a new router, then buy the Airport Extreme Base Station and a new USB External drive (or upgrade your existing one).

I've got the AEBS and a USB 500gb drive which I use strictly for Time Machine backups of my MacBook and MacBook Air.

@Jurisprudence: I have got MBP 120GB. I don't have many films and music. A bit of everything...

@Khris, your solution seams to be better than Time Capsule. It looks a bit cheaper as well. Did you have any problems configuring it? I remember that TM didn't work with wireless drives in the beginning...

I like my OWC drive, which works great with my Mac and matches too, but it's certainly not the cheapest. I just got it after a Cavalry drive crapped out and I just decided to pay up and get something I knew would work well. Firewire 800 is nice as well.

I'm extremely pleased with my AEBS, and I can't say I've had any problems with Time Machine backing up. I've even restored my Air Wirelessly from a TM backup without a hitch. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a new router.

I bought an enclosure with a firewire 400 port and usb 2.0. I think it was from macally. (through newegg) cost 39 bucks and i added my own 500 gig drive to it, works so well i bought another to store my movies and files that i do not need on my MBP everyday.
total cost was about $110 for the drive and enclosure.
