A quick question: I'm about to install Parallels on my MBP and wondered if anyone had run Guild Wars on the same setup? I'm assuming because it's an older game now that there shouldn't be any problems, but thought I'd ask the community.

    Thanks, all.

Curious, because I went on Parallels website and they listed several graphics-intense games that they are suppose to be compatible with.
Guess I'll just have to give it a try and see what happens.

Agreed. That has been what 99.9999% of people are saying. Stick with VMWare Fusion if you can...

So will VMWare Fusion run Guild Wars?

Um... that link IS from the Parallels site and does NOT list Guild Wars. Hence, it will not work.

VMWare may or may not support it. I don't see a specific list of games that are supported on VMWares site. It's a bad idea to run any fairly recent 3d game in a VM.

But I agree with everyone else... dump Parallels and go with Fusion. It's a nicer world :-D And plays much better with bootcamp partitions.

Crossover Games runs Guild Wars just fine - it's even an officially supported application, guaranteed to run. That's my advice, easy.

i'll second that. use wine (crossover mac, or now crossover games) if you absolutely have to run the thing within osx.

guild wars will run (in dx8 mode only, probably with significant graphical corruption and performance issues) within vmware fusion. it will not run at all in parallels.

crossover mac should be able to run it with just a small-medium performance hit compared to windows xp. it should still be very playable. dx8 only most likely...

windows xp will get you the best performance.

Well, to expand on my previous post, I have played Guild Wars with Crossover Games and it worked just fine for me. I had no issues during that session (I can't say I've played a lot yet, as Crossover Games was only released two weeks ago). EverQuest also runs nicely in Crossover Games, though with some issues. I'll test it some more and maybe post again about it sometime :)

well, that stinks. all the money spent... still, I can probably take Parallels back and get a refund. I'll check out Crossover Games. I'm not a WoW player, but I do like GW. I was afraid I'd have to keep a PC around just for that... ;) Thanks for the help everyone.

    But still...

why not just load XP onto your mac?

Well, I just got Crossover and it works like a champ. A very, very slight performance hit, but nothing that is serious enough to worry about. Don't know how it will work with other stuff, but there's not actually much else I'd want on my Mac from the Windows world.
I actually strongly considered Boot Camp, but really didn't like the idea of having to re-boot to get back to Mac OS...crazy, I know, but just a personal preference.
Thanks for all the help - problem solved. This is an awesome discussion group!

for running games within OSX, Wine is definitely your best choice (which you found, ie. crossover games)

however, if you do use parallels (or preferably vmware fusion) on occasion, there is no excuse for you to at least take advantage of boot camp.

install boot camp first, then vmware fusion, and you can now run one windows installation either directly (through boot camp) or through vmware in osx. This is my tactic because of the performance benefit, but crossover games is a wonderful OSX only solution. if you had no use for parallels other than to run games, then you shouldn't have bought parallels... but crossover will do you well.

i can't wait for them to release wine for free in OSX...
