I know Mac OS X is generally more secure than XP, but there must still be utilities that are useful. Like what would people suggest for an antivirus program? Is VirusBarrier any good or should I just stick with Norton? I suppose the built-in firewall is good enough. Are there any other tune-up, optimization or maintenance programs that people recommend?

iDefrag is nice to manually defrag your HD.
MacJanitor works well to force the mac to do some of it's routine chores.
The built in firewall is good. I don't know how good. I have a hardware firewall up as well. You should always try to have a hardware firewall if possible.
I don't actually use an AV program on my mac.

Most of the utilities you would use in Windows are not really necessary on the Mac. Actually, they're not really necessary in Windows either, aside from an AV. You don't need an AV, a hardware firewall is best, the built in works if you are away from home. OS X defrags on the fly, there is no registry to mucky up either. The only things I would highly recommend are AppZapper for uninstalling and SuperDuper! for backing up. I am sure there are more good ones, I just can't think of anything that is necessary atm.

I use mainmenu, for general house cleaning. This seems to work well, and is useful if you turn your laptop off overnight, when some of the routine tasks are set to run, and thus arent.
dont use a av either, but have both a hardware and mac firewalls enabled
