Any ideas when a full macbook pro refresh would occur?

I was borderline santa rosa mbp...

But I do not like the current look of the MBP.

Any ideas of when they will revamp it?

Just out of curiosity of course!

Anything you hear is just speculation.

If I was to guess, and many others are saying the same thing, it would come with the Montevina platform which requires new boards anyhow so it would be a good time for a redesign. Montevina is coming late spring so we could potentially see the refresh in early summer.

You don't like the looks of the current MBP? Seriously? To each his own I guess but.... seriously? :)

According to Wikipedia, Montevina is scheduled for release early July: WikiMontevina

So we could expect Apple to adopt the platform maybe in a couple of months?

It's probably safe to assume the MBP will be updated to Montevina sometime in late summer, but it's much more speculative to guess about whether the chassis will be updated.

It there a trend on how long apple revamps this line (e.g. Powerbook to MBP, etc) Is there any reason to suggest that montevina will require a chassis redesign unlike penryn?

Yes there are trends, every half year or so for MBPs and MBs. Speculation is that Montevina will bring about a major redesign of the MBP due to it requiring changing the boards within the MBP, which is good reason to make a change. It is all speculation. What really backs it up is that there hasn't been a remodel for the MBP for quite some time and it is long long overdue for one.

The two guys in the dorm next to mine both have the santa rosa MBP's.

    I just.... Dunno.

that color grey and the look of the keyboard.

    Beh.

    Great machine.

But the look doesn't suite me. :p

grey! How can you get any sexier than anodized aluminum? :p Carbon fiber comes close...

However if the MBP had a black anodized aluminum option... :D

The next expected update for the MBP is around June-ish for Montevina...but no one knows whether that will come with a redesign. After that, it'll be Nehalem in late 2008/early 2009.

I dont like the look of the MBP either. Its like this metallic grey/silver shade.. I like the black and white MBs better.

they are minimatic and scream apple, but MBP... it... does not say anything to me.

I guess it's a godo time for the ol' "to each their own", because there's nothing else on the market like the MBP, in my opinion. There are lots of plastic clones, but all of the Macs are distinctive. I guess it speaks to to their marketing genius that even those within have strong feelings for styling of the different Mac machine classes.

I don't think it will happen unit after September. Late September, but probably in October. The logic is this: Apple will wait for the college kids to cave in and buy a current MP/MBP before school starts. Then in October, they will reel everyone back in for the newly redesigned, hopefully, black anodized models. I've pretty much settled myself on getting a MBP, but not until it's black or at least dark grey. I bet that a black MPB would outsell the silver ones 3 to 1.

It's hard to believe that this design has been around for a long time. It's so simple yet distinctive and elegant. The whole metal surface acts as a giant heat sink. The fans hardly ever come on making it extremely quiet. Also, it's very rigid with zero flex, anywhere. Something I cannot say about the other plastic notebooks out there.

The colour may be dull but it's so hard to mark and finger-print. My black MB and the HP we have always had sever finger-prints that I had to constantly clean them. I have yet to clean my MBP once since I got it and I don't see any marks.

There's a lot to say about this design. Mostly good things. It'd be interesting to see what they come up with to replace it. It won't be the easiest job trying to outdo themselves. :)

Eh? Are we talking about the same system? The fans are ALWAYS on, at a minimum 2000rpm, actually, and the system gets hotter than ANY Core 2 Duo system I've ever owned. My old XPS M1330 was a fridge by comparison! And when playing games, the system fans are incredibly loud. Astonishingly loud, actually.

But, I chose the MBP because its design is stunning, and the OS is fantastic.

heh...I think we are. :) Well our two MBPs (my wife's and mine) are both as I described. I have to actually put my ear to the keyboard to even hear anything. Yeah, it does get warm underneath after some time, but not the palm rest, trackpad and keyboard areas even after hours of use.

I notice you have the 2.4 CPU and 7200 HD, but I doubt they make yours that much hotter and louder than ours.

Well, at 2000 RPM, to me I can barely hear the fans on my MacBook...so it sounds like its not on, but it is :).
