Hey everyone, here's a list of 4 problems my friend is having with her Macbook. I told her I'd get solutions for her, and I figured that here would be the best place to go for this sort of thing. Anyway, this is copy and pasted from an e-mail.

    1) i turned on my comp and my desktop was back to its original settings - all my widget and dock icon preferences were gone. firefox was gone as my preferred web browser, and all my bookmarks were gone. my desktop picture was gone. i had to restart all my applications fresh- for ex. when i turned on limewire it asked me what country im from like the 1st time i used it. (it does that every time i turn off my computer and turn it back on) also all my itunes folders are gone.

    2) everytime i shut off my computer this msg pops up saying "filevault - something about using 2 much disk space and if i want to recover it press continue, if not cancel (something like that, but the msg is longer)

    3) MOST IMPORTANT! all my word docs are in ****ing CODE!

    4) the computer overall has a lot of glitches, and freezes often.

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick response, I'll pass those links along, they look very helpful. Any idea about the questions 2,3 and 4?

Possibly a corrupt disk. It looks like her home folder is corrupt, or incorrectly named as Sam points out. This would account for missing configuration settings.

But the other 3 problems are indicative of a bad disk. I would get the specific error codes she's seeing and look them up on Apple's support site. Also post the problem on the Mac technical site forums.

Also, try to back up her personal files if at all possible. It might already be too late.
