As i add folders i would like to be able to change the plain old folder icon to something that is more in line as to what the folder contains, such as in windows. Is that possible with the Mac OS ??

Yes, right click the folder > get info > click the small icon at the top so it glows > edit > paste (paste the new icon)
You can also get programs like candy bar, if you want to change more faster, but it cost money.

Get Candybar. It'll be much, much easier.
The copy/pasting icon technique is not that reliable.

How is it not reliable? Candybar costs money and if you want to change a couple icons this works, fine.

If you have a .icns file, that method won't work.
Try it. Copy an icns file and try pasting that for a folder.
It'll just show you a generic icns file type icon.

    its not very intutive.. but...

Open up your icns file in Preview (the normal default app for it)
If you copy it out of preview, then paste it in the Get Info window of the Folder (or whatever) it will use the actual picture.

Ah.. yes, I forgot you could do that too. :p
But if you have to apply the icon to more than a few folders, it'll get very tiresome, very fast.

If someone is into theming his/her system (like I am), Candybar is the best option.

changing an icon or two is easy.. but yes, thats not what I'd do if I wanted to change a whole theme. I keep my default theme though and just change a couple of folder icons for a few things... all unique Icons, not just a re-theme. If you are wanting all icons of a certain type to change, you want to get a program designed to do that for sure.
