Worth enabling in Lion? How much of a performance hit is there now?
I recall that the first version of FileVault had some system-breaking problems when you started getting close to your hdd limit...is that still there?
-
I used FileVault in Snow Leopard and the performance hit was nothing major, especially considering that only the home folder was encrypted. As for the problem you mentioned, most filesystems will cause serious system issues if they get too full.
Right now its too early to tell how FV is in Lion, but I will probably try out the feature shortly. -
I'd wait for some in depth reviews...

The new FV, is it full disk encryption, or just home folder?

full disk encryption

John Siracusa mentions this in his great Ars review.
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion: the Ars Technica review
It sounds like the new FileVault whole disk encryption is invisible to the file system and the applications, because it runs on a layer above both using something called Core Storage. This should cause fewer (if any) compatibility problems. He also guesses that it'll have a very small performance impact on newer Intels, since it leverages a built-in instruction set to do the heavy lifting.
The jury is still out because of the shaky track record of the previous version, but I'll probably enable this on all my machines once it's had a bit more testing. -
On the question of FileVault's reliability in Lion, I think we can breathe a cautious sigh of relief:
FileVault 2
