ok so i'm set on buying a macbook pro. i absolutely love OS X and want a powerful but portable machine.

I'm a pretty big gamer and i figure i can always play games that are pc-only via boot camp with vista/xp.

I was all ready to buy a macbook pro until i started hearing about the faulty 8600's. The last thing that i want is a computer that has video card issues while i'm gaming or getting other work done.

So the macbook pro's refresh is coming out soon (supposedly) and it would make sense to just wait and get the new macbook pro coming out.

My problem is that I'm heading off to college mid september and can't really afford to wait much longer for the coming upgrade. so... what should i do? should i wait? perhaps i should buy now and just hope the 8600 doesn't die on me? I'm not really sure and at the moment am doing nothing at all, which isn't good either haha.

Any suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated!

Wait until you can wait no longer. If you need it, well, you need it, plain and simple. I'd just wait until the last moment, and if you have to get the current ones, be sure to get Apple Care as well.

I'd wait because it'll be no more than a month until the new mb and mbp will be updated.

Also I wouldnt want that nvidia gpu.

There is an expectation of a redesigned MBP, and with the recent NVIDIA news I don't think Apple will stick with the 8600M GT either. So yes, definitely wait if you can!

^^ expectation of a redesigned mbp, just like every other time it has been refreshed?

its not going to be long till the upgrade so i recommend waiting as well but with regard to the nvidia gpu complaints i wouldn't worry i mean how long were the gpus around with people using them till they realised they were defective...

well from knowing that all the parts and there were no different batches all use the same defective asic board and silicon means that they are all defective from the beginning.

Well :p, I do like to input common sense to my predictions :p. Like unless MBA reception was really bad, I don't expect a redesign for at least a year. The MacBook Pro redesign has been due, and there have been minor rumours on the matter. Based on Apple's records, usually the rumblings plus the due date = redesign.
