You own an Alienware, so you already have a base concept of how 'computers' work. Macs are computers.

I say this because you may know, with your Alienware, that 4GB isn't much RAM. It's not much for Windows, it's not much for OS X. Unlike your Alienware though, the MacBook Pro Retina has -permanent- RAM, it cannot be changed or upgraded. The 4GB it has will be 4GB forever.

It is not a wise purchase in 2014.

I would recommend saving a couple hundred more dollars and getting one of the current models with 8GB RAM.

Depends on what you do, for gaming I still recommend a windows laptop. and Personal preference possibly but I like to be able to have the ability to upgrade a laptop. in my case it is much more cost effective.

Normally buy windows laptops but i bought an MBA 2014 for wifey. Didn't notice that the RAM was permanent so I didn't get the 8GB upgrade. I guess after this it is back to windows.

you do know that more and more laptops don't have upgradeable ram, and as technology moves forward there will be no laptops anymore with any form of upgradeability becomes everything becomes so thin and so compact? By all means, go back to windows, but this is one of the most stupid reasons I have ever heard for doing so.

    Caveat emptor

I have to agree, even though I'm not much of a fan of either platform these days. That said, OSX is still fairly useful on 4GB of RAM.

The lack of RAM is the fault of the hardware (well, actually the buyer), not the operating system that runs on it.

That said, OSX (and Windows, for that matter) can run just fine on the base amount of RAM.

No, because you didn't do your due diligence prior to making your purchase. Fortunately, if you bought the notebook from Apple 14 days or less ago, you can return it to them for a full refund, no questions asked.

Also, for the record, there are now a fair amount of thin and light Windows laptops that also come with soldered RAM, either only in part or completely.

Well I didnt read about a laptop with fully soldered RAM, it's mainly 4Gigs + a DIMM slot.. with 8 gigs dimm you can reach 12Gb which is better than apple's 4gigs till the end of time..

that laptop will be fine for basic tasks, but i wouldn't count on it lasting very long and running either one of those games very well. i don't believe either of those games are resource demanding but the mbp you're looking to get is very basic. either use that money and get a more powerful windows laptop, or get the 15 with the gt750m if you can afford or wait a little.
