I have an external hd which in essence is a notebook hd in an enclosure. On my old Toshiba laptop it worked great but for some reason my 12 in ibook just wont read it. The power goes on but nothing shows up. It has worked once but thatÂ’s it. Is there any way to change the power setting on the ibook to allow the USB to power the hd enough that it should work properly. Thank you for reading this and trying to solve my problem.

I don't think it is possible to power a Hard Drive Via USB, if you want the computer to power it, get a Firewire 400 enclosure.

Also, you might need to have an Apple OS on the Hard Drive to read it. I have a USB external HD (60 GB Powermac HD Enclosed) that I use with my iBook when ever I am near an outlet and it works fine. I think it has Panther on it, and my iBook runs Tiger.

Was it powerd before on your toshiba through usb? If so, then usb on ibook should handle it.

Next, So it worked at least once on the ibook? If thats the case, try reseating the HD in the case, maybe it came loose.

Otherwise, my last thought is that the files sytem on your external drive will have to be Fat/Fat 32. that filesytem is basically universal between all OS'es.

Does you case have more than one USB plug? Some do in case the there is not enough juice on the first one. You could try another case as a cheap option.
