Are all external monitors compatible with macbooks? I have a SONY which is hooked up to my HP ZT3000. Can I still use it with my new macbook with the same monitor cord?

The only "compatibility" is the type of connection that it takes. So if it has vga for example and the laptop has vga, then you're good. But, even if your laptop and monitor have completely different connectors (aka one has vga only and one has dvi only) you can still buy a little adapter that will transform one feed into another so that both ends will match.

So no matter how you put it, you will be able to display your macbook on the external monitor.

You can, but you will need to purchase an adaptor from Apple. A mini-DVI to whatever connector your monitor uses adaptor.

I have to purchase an adaptor? My screen's a SONY HS73, I tried searching online to find some useful information but I don't know anything about monitors. Can someone do a quick search and tell me what I need to know, please?

Check the cable on that monitor of yours. If the connector looks like this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vga
then you need a mini-DVI to VGA converter, which you can find on the Apple store website.

If the connector looks like this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI
then you need a mini-DVI to DVI converter, which you can also find on the Apple store website.
