Okay... So I've used my DVI out a few times on 2 different monitors. However, I noticed the other day that when I'm using my mouse, it goes off screen...
then I noticed that the display info shows 2 monitors connected... and there isn't. I tried to rescan the displays and it still shows an additional CRT. I've tried rebooting... no help.

    any ideas?

Do you have the notebook screen lid closed as well when you do this?

No, when i use an external display, I don't mirror it.

I just tried to connect an LCD and it won't work. when I detect displays, it still shows CRT and wont' let me change the profile at all.
I'm using the DVI-VGA adapter for the LCD monitor in the lab, so not sure if that is effecting it or not.
Regardless, even with adapter disconnected and nothing connected to teh dvi out, it still shows that there is a 2nd display.

It can do two things, it can either mirror or act as an 2nd monitor if you don't have the notebook lid close.

Anyways, what you're saying is somewhat confusing.

Basically it's saying I have a 2nd monitor connected when I have nothing connected to it.
When I detect a display, regardless if I have a display connected or not, it shows up that I have a VGA monitor connected, even when I have none connected.

Well, I don't know if you know what profile it is, but if you delete the profile that was made when you connected that CRT in the past, it might do something.

Aye, I'm not sure how to do that.
Oi... I might have to try to connect it back to the display that caused the problem and see if I can have OS X remove the display first. Maybe I was supposed to remove it other than the way I did.

    ***fixed***

hah, i had a friend of mine look at it (he's a mac guy) and like... he ****ed it up worse so all I had was a blue screen on the laptop and nothing on the external. Then we forced a reboot and it came back fine and has been detecting when there is an isn't an exernal display connected properly.
