Now with a Thunderbolt config, is it possible to utilize a external GPU (say a desktop 6990 or GTX 590) to run programs on a macbook?

yes you can, specially when they launch it

however due to the bandwidth limitation I would advise only going as high as a single die card.

You'll be able to once a manufacturer provides an enclosure that adapts Thunderbolt to pci-e x4 2.0. Sonnet and Villagetronic have advertised they are making a product, bplus (aka hwtools) and amfeltec have also expressed interest.

Seems a big issue for these third parties (other than Sonnet) is getting Thunderbolt specifications and (possibly) the actual Thunderbolt controller from Intel.
