I just hooked up my Macbook Pro to an external display that runs natively at 1680x1050. Is there an option to select different resolutions for the Macbook Pro and the external display?

    Thanks!

Yes, there is something like extended desktop from Windows (each screen show different part of desktop). You need to set it up in Preferences window.

I was able to do that but I couldn't figure out how to set different resolutions so that the macbook pro and the external monitor each run at their native resolution at the same time.

I have it here: Apple logo -> System Preferences... -> Displays icon (Row: Hardware)

If you have connected external LCD, you will see list of resolutions for each display.

you can't set up your external display to mirror your mbp display and set them at different resolutions.

but why would you by an external display to mirror? just set it up to extend your desktop, turn off mirroring, then when you go to System Preferences/Display, you will have preference windows on both screens.

same goes for changing desktop backgrounds, etc.
