I just had the logic board replaced on my 2008-era MacBook Pro. It booted fine in the store so I brought it home and did a few operations on it and noticed that the fans were quite loud.
I've seen some comments on the web that it may be excess thermal paste applied.
Does anyone know whether Apple cranked up the fan speed on motherboard replacements for the nVidia 8600 problem or is this likely to be a thermal paste problem? I'm planning on bringing it back to the Apple Store tomorrow to complain about it.

I'd try resetting the SMC which they may not have done properly before doing anything else. Also have you monitored the temperatures to see if its so hot the fans really need to be spinning that fast, or they are doing it in error...?

Apple Store opened it up again and fixed it and told me that it was the thermal paste. It's running fine now. Almost four-year-old system with a refurb motherboard and it's running faster than before and may be good for another four years.
