    I was considering upgrading to this system's maximum of 16GB. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade or just plain overkill?

    Unless you plan to use 16 GB by editing extremely large photos or rendering video, 8 GB is more than enough (not to mention much cheaper). The 8 GB kit I bought for my MBP was on sale at Fry's for $30.

    I would add that 16GB might also come in handy if you need to run a lot of VMs.

    If you can get the RAM at a good price and you feel you'd benefit from that much memory, then go for it.
