Since no one posted this... I just checked software update.

APparently it'll eliminate the startup noise that you hear from the DVD drive.

    Very happy to see this.

Yes you did, Seshan. Everyone with a MacBook Pro did/does. Anyway, you have to run the update, and then you have to do ANOTHER Update, so make sure you do a second Software Update after the first one. I thought the update didn't work either till I did the second one. :)

Although this update only works on sleep/wake, not power ON DVD-drive sounds, apparently.

I thought the problem was a munching sound on start up. The only thing I hear on start up is a little zip zip sound, Witch I assume is the optical going back and forth checking for a disk.

Different drives make different sounds. My wife has an identical MacBook Pro to mine, but hers makes the "zip zip" sound, whereas mine makes the nasty grinding sound. We have different manufacturers of our DVD drives. So, basically, with the update, you'll have no more zip-zip coming out of sleep, and I have no more griiiiiinding sounds. :)

Well I still have a zip zip sound even after a full update, Apple says it should stop it from making the sound from start up and wake. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3744

It does says "This update addresses noise made by the optical disk drive during startup and wake from sleep on your Mac."

Isn't that the same as saying it'll stop the noise during start up (after a full shut down) or wake (after sleeping it)..

It stops the noise from happening when resuming from sleep, but I still get it upon startup.
