i think you need to find a DVD ripping tool that'll give you the output file as a .mov file. but that's as far as my knowledge goes.

Pretty sure it cant be a mov file.

Get handbrake, and it will convert dvds to ipod video. Pretty sure handbrake is multi-platform.

With Windows I used Handbrake to convert the DVD file for my Touch (love that little software) after I'd ripped it with DVD Shrink or DVDFab decryptor.

My question for knowlegeable Apple people is this:
I thought that Handbrake wasn't capable of both ripping and transcoding copy-protected material directly from a commercial DVD (I thought that was in the documentation somewhere), and that for Mac you need to use something like MacTheRipper before you can have Handbrake transcode it for iPod?

so i went and checkout this handbreak thing, and with the link posted i got this

    Windows 2000/XP/Vista
    GUI (3.5 MB) Download Checksums
Command Line Interface (3.2 MB) Download Checksums

so the question is... which one do i download... do i need the GUI (what is this?) or do i need the command line interface...

and is it simple to use this software ?

You want the one with the gui, unless you want to type commands in to transcode the video.

Personally I haven't used the windows version so I cant say how easy it is to use in windows, but osx its pretty straightforwd iirc.

so to resurect this... i used handbreak and well it did something lol... not too sure what it did, i picked a file, and a destination, and i now have file called Wall-E.mpg4

tried to play it on my computer and it gives me a scrambled weird screen, there is sound and video there, i know there is, but its distorted to hell lol... i think its simply i dont know how to convert the video properly...

    any advice would be great

    thanks

No, Handbrake is perfectly capable of ripping directly from a commercial dvd.

ok you should definitely jump in google and search for eg. "converting dvd movie for iphone" because that'll give you a step by step tutorial to get through this, you may be able to do the whole process in handbrake, it is a great program, i have it running right now, basically you have to jump into handbrake, then it'll prompt you for a source, in your case the dvd, you will have to explore the dvd a bit and select the biggest file, from memory i think its a .vob file, then in handbrake there are many "presets" select then one for iPhone/iPod Touch, then you can simply click start and handbrake will do the rest, and the more you do this you can start experimenting with changing different settings, also someone mentioned mactheripper, number 1 it is only for os x, he's running windows and 2 you may need this sort of software in conjunction with handbrake in case the dvd you are trying to rip a dvd that has some sort of copy protection on it.
