Anyone out there using a Drobo ( www.drobo.com) yet? It looks like a great external storage configuration. Are there similar things that work with the Mac?

No, I have not yet used a Drobo. An "automated storage robot" sounds interesting though. FYI, Drobo IS Mac compatible:
    Beware of robots :D!!!

Thanks. Keep us apprised of its usefulness. I like the idea of "idiot-proof" raid, and hot swapping disks. It looks like I can access it through my PC or Mac, which is of added benefit. There were a couple of naysayers in the Newegg reviews, but then there always seem to be.

Before investing in something like this, it may be wise to see how Time Machine performs in Leopard.

this thing is WAY too expensive, it is $499 just for the enclosure isn't it? And it is just a simplified and easier to use RAID setup, granted it is the only device of it's kind in a way, I don't think the price can be justified when HDD failure is not something that is extremely common, when used properly.

I would definitely spend money elsewhere, on something from Caldigit, they have very good FW800/400, USB2.0 enclosures, that are all aluminum, and everything can easily be replaced, including the fan.

if you are buying any RAID setup for a Mac it really doesn't make much sense to buy one that doesn't use FW800/400
