Does the newer white macbooks discolor? Are they easily scratched?

I really want to buy a black one as I prefer a matte finish and it wouldn't discolor, but I want it new and I cannot find any here in Canada, so I will have to buy a white one. This is going to be my very first mac and to me it's a lot of money... I hope it will be worth it (I'm a little nervous about the switch) :).

The black MB's don't get discolored very easily because they are a dark black, and nobody can see any dirt/discoloring. On the other hand, if you have oily, greasy, or sweaty palms or fingers, that will show up as fingerprints. That's the only problem with the matte finish.

I'm not sure about the latest model but I have seen some white MacBooks that are almost all yellow from not being cleaned. As long as you clean it perhaps once a week with damp cloth you shouldn't have any problems... if it does discolor, you can use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on it and it will look like new again.

Or you could get Apple's cleaning solution "iKlear." I have heard good things about that stuff.

Quite a while I'd imagine. It only turns a yellowish color from the oil residue and sweat from your skin.

oh ok, so it just turns yellow on the inside and not the glossy outside?

Right, unless you spill something on it. The inside is a material that is weaker if you will, compared to the glossy hard plastic on the outside, and therefore is more susceptible to stains.

Here's a link to a black macbook, it's refurbished but it's the only one I could find: http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB404LL/A?mco=MjE0NDk5Mw

thanks, I found one on the Canadian apple store too for $1200 CAN (25% off). I can keep the inside clean no problem, I thought the whole laptop would turn yellow. I prefer to buy new, so if I don't find any new black ones, I'll go for white. What about the scratches on the glossy surfaces?

It's not as hard to scratch the white one's, as compared to the new Aluminum one's. They haven't been known to scratch all too much, but if you don't take care of it, it will surely get beat around.

So I shouldn't worry about it if I take extremely good care of my stuff (which I do)? Did you ever hear of a a pre-scratched macbook (out of the box)?

I've read a couple posts around the form where people described opening a factory sealed Macbook Alum only to find it's scratched up.

Wow . I would be furious if I spent $1500+ on a product and find it all scratched up when I first open the box.

Can you tell that they have been used before? I am very picky when it comes to my electronics. Do they change all the parts that are user touchable or just the parts that don't work.

Anyone here bought a refurb from apple? Did it look new?

Apple has a high reputation when it comes to refurbished products. They go through vigorous Quality Control by special Apple Technicians, and they look brand new when you get one.

In some cases it is actually BETTER to get a refurb because they go through more extensive testing before they are shipped. This assures you that they will most likely not break down.
