I'd like to do mini-dvi > HDMI to hook up to the TV (for when I want to watch shows, etc). But, I don't want to have to use another cable - just one (which is why laptops with HDMI are convenient).

    Thanks!

DVI.. mini or otherwise is a video only port... there will be no audio through it.

now if you have a newer machine that as Mini-DP (mini displayport) ... the newer version of mini-DP on machines support audio out. So it depends on which machine you have... but if its older and is mini-DVI, theres no chance.

The problem with saying something like that is that there are always exceptions - it's pretty common, especially on the desktop, for manufacturers to use non-standard pinouts to carry audio as well (since HDMI is just DVI+audio).

    But.

I think it's just video out on the MBPs. You could use the headphone out jack, though, since I believe that doubles as a digital audio out port, doesn't it? Yeah, it's another cable, but if you're going to the trouble to hook your laptop in, taking 3 extra seconds to plug in an audio cable isn't a big deal. Especially since you could just leave them plugged into the TV all the time.

Yea, I think the 2010 MBPs output both video and audio via mini displayport connecting to a hdmi cable by hdmi adapter.
