Does anyone use this software for their mac osx. Will it work with leapord and intel based macs? I dont think i am gonna buy iWork 08. I wont have the money to. Open office is for free so i see no reason to download it unless it will run horribly on OS 10.5. Thanks for the help.

Well, OpenOffice for Mac uses X11, so it takes up more system resources than usual. If you want a free open source office suite, use NeoOffice, which is based on OpenOffice but written for Mac and doesn't need X11.

I'm not sure if NeoOffice works with Leopard, I don't have Leopard to test it out. But yeah, go NeoOffice over OpenOffice for Mac.

According their website and a link wo wikipedia from their site neooffice gives macs the blue screen and it crashes in leapord. Yikes looks like iWork08 is my best bet. I could get word 2004 but under rosetta i hear its horrible. I will try to get iwork then and save up for it.

iWork '08 is a good idea then. You may want to try it out first before purchasing, you can download a 30-day trial on Apple's site.

Yeah i am taking a creative wirting course and well writing poems and short stories is obviously going to be a no brainer. So i do need a nice word processor.

I use NeoOffice whenever I need to send someone else a document for editing, as iWork does not support ODF yet. However, when doing stuff to be published, iWork makes my job a little simpler.

I use NeoOffice, generally saving to the Word doc format. I don't use it much, but it hasn't caused me any trouble so far. I'm on Leopard too -- no grayscreens here.

Word 2004 is indeed a bit laggy under Rosetta... it's not horrible, but iWork would probably work better.

I use NeoOffice and it works fine in Leopard. Unless you're doing something professional with your word processing program, NeoOffice should be more than adequate for most everything.

By the way, an updated 'native' MS Office is due very soon. My suggestion would be to give NeoOffice a try first; and if for some reason you're dissatisfied, then to decide whether to get the *new* MS Office or iWork '08.

If you're a university student, you might get MS Office quite cheap, actually.

Yes, Microsoft Office for Mac 2008, which will be Universal Binary, is being released I think at Macworld Expo, or at least very soon.

Yeah i know ms office 2008 is coming soon. Anf i also knew intel cpu support would be a must. I dont really want to buy my mac and then use a ms program. But whatever ya know. I would go with iwork if anything else due to it probally going to be cheaper.

Well, that's true, iWork is significantly cheaper. If its just a word processor that you're mainly using, then iWork will be fine; if it involves a lot of spreadsheet work then you might want to consider going to Office for Mac as Excel is much more powerful than Numbers.

It's important not to overlook Powerpoint. Even if you don't use it to create presentations, your classmates and teachers might. The majority of the digital notes I receive from teachers are created using Powerpoint, so they wil probably work best with it.

Most of my class's are computer class'. So normally i am starring at computer screen the whole time watching the teacher use the software and replicating what they are doing onto the macs we use at school. Thats the main reason i am getting this machine is because my current laptop isnt really capable of handling things like the art history brush or having all the layers in photoshop turned on. To be honest the macbook has the CPU the amount of memory, battary life and size i need to last me throughout the 2 and a half hour class and through the programs i need.

I am using Neooffice under leopard and there is no problem at all. I do not use them quite often though, because I am using latex to make my document.

Heh, the people swearing by TeX is growing.

As for NeoOffice, while I wouldn't recommend it as a good word processor or office suite, I don't have any technical problems with it under Leopard. It'll get the job done for most simple documents as long as you don't do anything too fancy.
