Does anyone know what's wrong with my superdrive?

I thought there was a firmware update to fix the annoying ones?

There was an update to "fix" it, however it really has mixed results. For me, it silences the noise on being awoke from sleep, but not on initial startup. It also shouldn't make that noise more than once.

OP: There is probably something wrong and you should get it checked out ASAP, especially if it's still under warranty. You, or someone else, didn't try putting an 80mm disk in it? (Standard disks are 120mm)

No, I've only used it a couple times for disks and they were all standard. I got the laptop in August, the problem started in October or November and lasted for a couple days and magically went away, now it's been back for about 2 days and is worse than it originally was in October/November. It lasts for 11 seconds and is the exact same "rhythm" every time now.

Take it in and get it looked at before risking further/worse damage.

both of my Macbook Pros... (late 2008 unibody, and Original early 2006) both always make that sound when turning on, but not waking from sleep, unless it was a full hibernate style sleep because of a dead battery.

well technically my Unibody doesn't make any sounds anymore since I don't have the superdrive in it anymore.

Well, yea that sound is the superdrive accepting a disk. If you had a disk that was partially inserted on bootup, it would suck it in.

Yea there was a firmware update to fix the problem, and if you're under warranty you might as well get it checked out.

Though honestly, I don't think it would be doing too much damage, it may end up killing the drive prematurely, but they're pretty cheap to get a new one anyways.

Possible simple fix, just keep a CD in there at all times, and it wont make that noise ;p

Why use a kludge to fix something that is most likely repairable/replaceable under warranty?

It fixes the noise, and if the OP isn't able to get it to a repair centre/doesnt have the time to do it, then it's better then having the noise if it is annoying.
