Apple is ever planning on releasing a quad-core processor laptop?

For laptops built for media creation, I was surprised to learn they do not offer any.

As I don't follow Apple news releases or general rumors, has there been any word of a quad-core Macbook Pro?

Well i think apple has a bit of catchingup to do with the system design.
They can barely fit a daul core i7 in there and you want a quad?
They really need to rethink there design and catch up to other companies.
An i7 620M hit 100C  And thats a daul core...
You might see an i7 720QM but i dont expect anything further unless you want your house/office to go....

Yeah, like TheCodeBreaker said, Apple really needs to get their act together, in a sense of up-to-date with other companies. I have read too many posts with people saying their MBP is overheating.

I have to agree as well, I find it rather amusing when ANY computer has to maintain a temp above 65-70C when not at max CPU and GPU load and even then should stay under 80 ... Intel, AMD and Nvidia even reccomend these temps, big deal if max is 105-110

but af far as media creators go Apple does seem to support the software reasonable but hardware wise is very sub par for many people whom actually CREATE large content. a good example is comparing an Elitebook 8740W with the MBP 17" ( My wife owns both )

the elitebook now posesses a 10bit IPS screen with almost 179 degree viewing angles. runs a quad core cool ( yes some users needed to reapply thermal paste ) and has an i'll be darned PROFESSIONAL GPU in it. In her case the m7820 ( essentially same as a radeon 5870 )

is it as stylish ... nope but it can render MAYA in 1/60th the time, render A-CAD in 1/40th the time which in her case is BIG productivity when working onsite.

battery life .. not so much but I have yet to meet a serious content creator whom will complain if a machine has a 4 hour battery if they can render and build what another machine takes 20 hours or more to do.

and to make it even more confusing ... its cheaper than the MBP 17" even with a 3 year onsite warranty if you google for coupon codes

Nobody has been able to accurately and consistently predict what Apple has up its sleeve. A quad is a possibility in the future if Apple decided to offer it. I'm interested to see what they are going to do with liquid metal now that they locked up the licensing. Perhaps they are working on the next true revision of the MBP.

Apple seems to go pretty mainstream these days.
They even removed the Express Card slot in favor of an SD card reader on the 15" MBP and not long ago they didn't even have an option for matte screens.
I really hope that future models focus on the creative professionals market like they used to.

If only Apple would "choose" to use a quad-core processor with Atom-like power consumption, then those pesky Mac-Pro towers would finally be obsolete.

    Right?

As soon as Intel comes out with a 35 Watt Quad core, we'll see one in a Macbook. (35 watt is the same TDP of current Macbook CPU's)

When that happens, the Mac Pro's will be up to 16 cores, and the question will be .... "Does anyone know if a 16 core Macbook Pro is in the pipeline?"

Sadly, I think you're right. The human race is so predictable.

I think what is really missing is a "macbook power". They have macbook air for "extra portability" (if you ask me its not worth it).

They have the macbook pro for the main stream.

Why not a Macbook Power. It would have the quad core processor, something like an ATi 5830, be 15" and 17", and have 4-5 hours of battery life, and maybe be 1.5" thick with the same Unibody construction.

that would be cool, but Apple isn't into having many lines or models... so I doubt that would happen.

no, you haven't. they can run hot sometimes, but running hot =/= overheating.

my MBP has been simply the quietest, fastest laptop I've owned for 95% of my uses. apple's real-world performance benchmarks show the company is not behind any other companies.

wake us when other companies get their act together and offer MBP-like performance while still giving us 6 hours or more battery life without daisy-chained batteries and 3lbs wall chargers.

Thats a bunch of n00bs on Yahoo or Mac forum wonder why there Macbooks case hits 75C. The case is the heatsink for the Unibody models. It doesn't overheat, it just runs hot, hotter than the PC they had before. I would say as a general rule: Your laptop isn't overheating, unless the internal components go over 100C. My CPU hits 99C so I'm safe :)

We will just have to wait until October and see what they update then.
