I wanted the same but I picked up the mbp anyway and its not that much bigger than the macbook and weights almost the same. I am really happy I did. I love the small things like the backlit keyboard and the led screen. Its really just as portable as the macbook in my opinion. Only downfall is its a bit more expensive.

I was wondering the same thing. It would be nice if the Mac Book was updated to Santa Rosa with a 8400 GT. I think Apple's hands have been too busy with Leopard and the iPhone though.

I think it will receive an upgrade when Intel reprices chips on July 22.

Besides a 2.16ghz=2.0 santa rosa, so I think it would have to put a 2.2 in the black machines, this would canabalize MBP sales.

What's the likely hood of the MacBook getting a dedicated graphics card?

i have a feeling macbooks will stay with an integrated graphics card in order to keep the distance between the macbook pros to justify the price difference.

I'd more expect to see an 8400GT in a smaller MBP (probably either 12" or 13.3"). I agree with phamzter that the Macbook will likely stick with integrated graphics sadly.

I don't think that will happen. Of the handful of 12 and 13.3" notebooks with a dedicated GPU, how many are as slim as the MacBook/MBP? Most, if not all of them, vary in thickness with parts of the notebook 1.4-1.5" thick. I'm going to assume it won't be possible for Apple to add the dedicated GPU without increasing the thickness, and for aesthetic reasons I also doubt they'll make a notebook that isn't flat on the bottom. And of course, there would really be no point to a 12-13" MBP that didnt have a dedicated GPU, because then it would just be a MacBook in a metal case. They could probably fit the dedicated GPU in a slim 12-13" if the optical drive were removed, but that would be stupid. So my conclusion to this is if we see a smaller Mac notebook, it will probably be between 10 or 11" and won't be a Macbook or MBP, but something new.

On the MacBook graphics, the latest integrated from Intel is still a significant upgrade over the 950 that's in there now.

what I don't get about the current macbooks is the upgrade prices. From the bace price of $1099, its an extra $200 for the 13" larger screen model with a +.16ghz processor, as well as 40gb on the harddrive. Then the next upgrade is another $200 for 40gb more on the harddrive but that's it. I don't think that last upgrade is worth it. With the new macbooks I would like to see something more out of the second upgrade, for instance a GPU upgrade to dedicated card (like a 8400GT). I just don't think you get enough out of the high end mb

I agree that the Macbooks should have been designed with the SR chipset but what do you mean by 13" larger screen model? They're all 13" screens.

That's my favorite feature on the MBP's and the Powerbooks is the backlit keyboard. To me it's the most underrated feature. I can type very well but in darker situations the backlit keyboard comes in handy for like the F-keys, the numbers and certain quotations that even a good typist can't find them by touch.

It is not that the MacBook wasn't designed for the Santa Rosa platform but that the current iteration of the MacBook was designed before Santa Rosa was available.

That may be true Josh but the Macbook was released after the SR chipset showed up in Windows notebooks.

Geez...I must be slacking on my dates! I just realized that the current MacBook came out a week after Santa Rosa was released.

I doubt that Apple will put a dedicated graphics card in the Macbooks. They used to do this with the iBook's but i cannot see them doing this again.

There are a few 13.3 inch laptops out there that are lighter than the MacBook and that use a dedicated GPU. Most of the notebook manufactures have seemed to have settled though on putting integrated graphics card in smaller factor notebooks.

I would like if it Apple released an pro ultraportable but I really cannot see Apple releasing one anymore. They killed of the 12 inch Powerbook pro ultraportable in 2006 i feel when they released the MBP and i doubt that we will be seeing a successor. I think that if they were going to do this that they would have done so already the MBP is already 17 months old. Apple want people to buy the high end MacBook who desire a pro ultraportable.
I have owned a MBP and do not want something that size again i prefer a smaller form factor and for portability i prefer a smaller lighter notebook with a decent GPU but at this current moment in time Apple does not cater for my needs.

Apple are also doing very well with their notebook sales at the moment so that may give them maybe less impetus to change things.

I do think size and Apple's need to maintain the 'gap' between the MB and the MBP is the key here. Apple doesn't want any of the MBP's thunder be stolen.
