    Hi Guys:

I need to ditch an aging Sony SZ, which has crap battery life. I've been looking at the MBP since the 13 has the physical features that I require (lightweight and long battery life).

However, I'm worried about the glossy display. Can the MBP 13 be used outside in sunlight environment? My SZ was unusable unless I was under good shade and even then, it looked washed out.

I know the 15 inch MBP has the matte screen option but it's price point exceeds my budget.

    Thanks,
    Claude

Any screen will be useless under direct sunlight. The MBP 13's display in my experience is barely useable under sunlight conditions because of how bright it can go.

That logic is actually backwards...a BRIGHTER screen will be MORE usable outdoors.

That being said, I concur that my 13" MBP is barely usable outdoors even at max brightness. You definitely have to face away from the sun and I usually tilt the screen down to minimize reflection of the sky. Unfortunately that's the nature of any glossy type display.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear but..."Barely usable" is better than "Unusable".

    "Barely" > "Unusable"

So because the MBP's screen is very bright, it is BETTER in sunlight. Words are so hard to manipulate :p.

As Snork alluded to, almost any computer with a glossy screen will give you difficulties under direct, bright sunlight. This is the nature of the screen, not a MBP.

Brighter screen with brightness level of around 400-500nit are defintely usable under direct sunlight. Anti-reflective film or coating also help a lot. Of course, macbook pro does not have those kind of screen so that's something you'll have to deal with.
