So I bought my Macbook pro a few weeks ago, I opened the lid today to find a strange dent on the right bottom side of the laptop. It's almost like it has outlined the bottom of the speaker. I've also been having WiFi troubles with the laptop. Sometimes it connects sometimes it doesn't. Speed varies A LOT, goes from 40mbps to less than 1mbps. Never had that issue on any of my other laptops or my phones tbh.

I was thinking of sending back the laptop for a replacement, as I think the wifi card is faulty (as the main reason). No one else is experiencing this on their new MBP. Do you guys think apple will accept it?

Here is a picture of the unknown damage:

That damage looks like something is pressing hard from the inside of the laptop like it wasn't installed properly or perhaps a small drop of an object in that area.

As for the WiFi, the previous 2019 MBP 15 inch had exactly the same issue you mentioned, @custom90gt advised me to check it out as that wasn't normal but I refunded the entire laptop fortunately and the new 16 inch MBP that is now dead (water damage) didn't have that issue. I think it's a lose WiFi cable. Definitely take it back to Apple.

Not a loose wifi cable but a loosely soldered wifi chip! I hate that the wifi card is soldered, why apple?

Yeah right, I forgot that but you get the point :D

So how would they fix it? change the entire motherboard or what?

Probably, I know they would give a replacement laptop though. They would take the ones that need repairing to a third party 'authorised' apple repair centre. Then they would put that motherboard in a new chassis and sell it as 'refurbished' when you damn well know that the wifi chip has been reballed and not replaced...

My 16" has a good 10-15 dBM less signal on both 2.4/5 Ghz than my Inspiron 7577 (Intel AX200), Precision 5530 (Intel 8265AC) or XPS 13' 9370 (KIller 1435) and XPS 13' 9350 (Intel AX200) laptops at the same locations. On LAN file transfer tests it peaks at like 40-50 MB/s while the others range from 60-80 MB/s with only dual antenna WiFi cards with the router in 80Mhz AC mode. I feel like the 3x3 Broadcom chip in the MacBook either has driver issues, may be inferior to the Intel/Qualcomm chips in my other laptops or something is loose. I literally have to be 5ft in line of sight to get a 35dBm reading while my other units can get that directly one floor below the router at like 10-12ft distance.

I called Apple support this morning to speak to them about latency spikes and occasional packet drops along with low transfer speeds and signal, I told them as a network beta tester I have access to multiple routers with Qualcomm/Broacom chipsets and the issue is similar on all, with no issues on the Dell laptops mentioned previously. He was polite but tried to blame Comcast and congestion in my location but I kept pointing out only the MacBook is affected, which invalidates their assumption about my ISP and I mean how would that even make sense in regards to lower speeds on LAN tests to a NAS or USB drive on my router. They want me to test a different location and network now and possibly mail it in or go to the store for testing..

Anyone else check signal/file transfer rates of the 16" in comparison to their other notebooks with any of the following; Intel 8265/9260/AX200 or Qualcomm QCA6174A aka Killer 1435/1535 cards? Testing comparison in AC mode at 80Mhz of course as that's what the MacBook is limited to. I may go to the Apple store later to compare with the 16" units there to see if this is normal or just my unit.I've seen claims on places like NoteBookcheck that it should be able to hit 100+ MB/s (800+ Mbps) peak at least in very close ranges, of course AP choice and environment also have a huge impact.

Mods can move this, I just went off on a tangent from the main topic, sorry.

Returned my MacBook Pro and promptly got given a new one. Apple service at its best, didn’t even notice the speaker dent under direct lighting.

Even above the return period they didn’t say anything, that’s why I love apple support :)

Obviously I liquid metalled the new one I could, this time in a record time of 30 minutes lol. I’m getting way better temps on this unit but I got a worse chip, only turbos to 4.1GHz...

Sounds good. Apple support can be hit and miss sometimes, but good to hear they handled things well for you.
